Cambodia

EDM number 1966 in 1992-93, proposed by Dafydd Wigley on 06/05/1993.

That this House congratulates John Pilger on his excellent and immensely disturbing recent documentary on the growing official recognition of the Khmer Rouge with Cambodia under the apparent blessing of the United Nations; further congratulates Friends of Cambodia and Oxfam for jointly organising a series of concerts and exhibitions in Wales to highlight the current situation in Cambodia; regards the political recognition given to the Khmer Rouge and its officials by United Nations forces as nothing more than a tragic historic betrayal of the people of Cambodia who suffered genocide under Pol Pot between 1975 and 1979 when 2.5 million people were butchered; condemns the United Nations for allowing the Khmer Rouge to be recognised as a legal political force; believes that the futility of the United Nations' approach to the Cambodian question can be clearly seen in the fact that a political 'solution' has been embarked upon allowing the Khmer Rouge to seize effective control of two thirds of the whole country; further believes that the true face of the Khmer Rouge has been shown in the recent spate of murders which have escalated in the run up to the Cambodian elections; strongly criticises the Government for being economical with the truth in Parliament concerning the role of British military personnel in training the Khmer Rouge between 1988 and 1991; and further condemns the United Nations for its lack of progress in clearing mines in Cambodia as was evidenced by the documentary.

This motion has been signed by a total of 50 MPs.
