Severn Bridges Act And The Secretary Of State For Transport
EDM number 1959 in 1992-93, proposed by Roy Hughes on 05/05/1993.
That this House calls upon the Secretary of State for Transport to make a public apology for the action of his Department in indicating to the Severn Bridge Users Association on 24th March that no objections were raised at any stage in the passage of the Severn Bridges Act through Parliament when in fact Gwent County Council acting on behalf of the Standing Conference on Regional Policy submitted a petition against the Bill on 1st February 1992 based on the need to (a) incorporate provisions in the Bill for a public inquiry into future toll increases, (b) for the debt on the existing bridge to be written off thereby lowering the scale of the tolls increase and (c) a call for the toll increases set out in the Bill to be postponed until the new bridge was in place.
