Whitfield By-Election

That this House warmly welcomes the result in the Whitfield Longhaugh division in Dundee on Tayside Regional Council on Thursday 29th April in which the Scottish National Party candidate, Mr James Duthie, overturned a Labour majority of 233 to win the seat; congratulates the winning candidate on an excellent result; believes that the SNP's campaign to prevent any privatisation or franchising of Scotland's water services struck a clear chord with the electors; and wonders to what extent Labour's defeat was determined by the decision of the Labour front bench to save the Prime Minister's bacon in the early hours of Thursday 22nd April on the issue of a referendum on the Maastricht Treaty.
