Chinese Occupation Of Tibet

That this House welcomes the visit to the United Kingdom of the Dalai Lama and his meetings with the Foreign Secretary and with representatives of the other major political parties and (a) notes the continuing illegal occupation of Tibet by military and police forces of the People's Republic of China and the denial of basic human rights of the Tibetan people thus threatening their distinct cultural, religious and national identity, (b) welcomes the continuing non-violent policy of the Tibetan people in their struggle for freedom, (c) welcomes the recent call of Her Majesty's Government to the People's Republic of China for talks without preconditions with the Tibetan leaders to reach a solution and (d) calls on Her Majesty's Government to recognise the urgency of the present state of affairs in which the accelerated influx of Chinese workers and settlers will result in Tibetans becoming a minority within their own country and to use its influence in the United Nations to start the process of negotiation towards self-determination accepted as their right under international law and recognised in the United Nations General Assembly Resolution No. 1723 (xvi) and Resolution 279 (xx).
