All-Seater Stadia And The Taylor Report
EDM number 190 in 1992-93, proposed by Tom Pendry on 04/06/1992.
That this House welcomes the announcement by the Secretary of State for National Heritage, reconsidering the imposition of all-seater stadia throughout the entire English Football League; recognises that this announcement follows representations to the Government from a wide cross-section of the game urging such a re-think, including a major submission to the Government from the Parliamentary All-Party Football Committee; believes that the Government's change of heart is a fully justified reward for the efforts of football to provide a more welcoming and safer environment at matches; considers that in seeking to maintain high standards of safety at football, within a realistic framework for the game's future, the announcement is firmly within the spirit of Lord Justice Taylor's report into the Hillsborough disaster; notes that this move demonstrates a laudable willingness on the part of the Government to reconsider policy towards football in the light of changing circumstances; and trusts that this constructive dialogue with football and willingness to exercise positive flexibility will be continued as future developments within the game emerge.
