Future Of The Merchant Navy

That this House welcomes the decision to include the Merchant Navy in the commemoration of the Battle of the Atlantic and the Western Approaches; points out that, during the Second World War, 30,189 merchant seamen lost their lives, 5,264 were reported missing, 4,402 wounded and 5,556 interned; notes that 11,455,906 tons of shipping were lost through enemy action, 2,714 ships, representing more than half of the total tonnage of the Merchant Fleet; acknowledges the long overdue recognition of the role of the Merchant Navy in the battle of the Atlantic; and believes that the nation and therefore the Government can best repay the debt to the nation's seafarers by regenerating the nation's shipyards to build the ships, thus ensuring that seafarers can continue to uphold the tradition of a maritime nation that has served Britain well over the centuries.
