British Council And New Challenges
EDM number 1855 in 1992-93, proposed by Bridget Prentice on 26/04/1993.
That this House congratulates the British Council on the official opening of its offices in Leipzig, the fifth German city in which the Council is now established; notes that the offices are shared with the Institut Francaise, a unique cohabitation seen by the Council as a signal of Britain's commitment to collaboration with its European partners; recognises the achievements of Susan Barnes and her staff in Leipzig, as well as those of Iain Frater and his staff in Berlin, in extending the work of the British Council into the new Lander, where there is a high demand for English language teaching resources; and urges the Government to ensure that the British Council is adequately funded to enable it to meet the growing need for its various services throughout the emerging democracies of eastern and central Europe.
This motion has been signed by a total of 54 MPs.
