25th Anniversary Of The Implementation Of The Abortion Act
EDM number 1848 in 1992-93, proposed by Ann Winterton on 26/04/1993.
That this House notes with sadness that the Abortion Act first came into force 25 years ago on 27th April 1968; deeply regrets that under the authority of this Act over 3.7 million unborn children have been killed, over 90 per cent. of them for reasons merely of social convenience, that only 151 abortions or 0.004 per cent. of the total were performed in emergency to save the life of the mother; observes that such liberal abortion laws have done nothing to liberate women, or to end the social problems for which they were hailed as the panacea; expresses its sorrow that the United Kingdom law has become a model for liberal abortion laws the world over; accepts that this legislation brings shame upon the House and upon the country; and believes that the time has now come for the working of the Abortion Act to be thoroughly reviewed and for Her Majesty's Government to bring forward proposals for humane legislation which strikes a more acceptable balance between the care of the individual mother, and the inalienable right to life of the unborn child.
