Blue Circle Building Near Aldermaston
EDM number 1842 in 1992-93, proposed by Ken Livingstone on 22/04/1993.
That this House notes with alarm the announcement that contamination from plutonium and uranium occurred in the vicinity of AWE at Aldermaston as a result of flooding in July 1989; notes that Blue Circle Concrete has announced its intention to vacate its headquarters office block which was affected by this contamination and that AWE have admitted responsibility for the contamination; notes that claims are currently being made however that the contamination may be linked to the fact that the Blue Circle headquarters was built on the site of a privately owned experimental light-water nuclear reactor fuelled by uranium 253 which has a half-life of 700 million years; notes that Nuclear Electric recommends that no development should occur on the site of a decommissioned nuclear reactor for at least 130 years; and calls upon the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate to conduct an investigation into the extent and source of existing radiation both on the Blue Circle site and Aldermaston village and into the fate of the reactor building which was apparently demolished by a firm reported to have no expertise in nuclear matters.
