Otis Factory In Kirkby

EDM number 1803 in 1992-93, proposed by George Howarth on 20/04/1993.

That this House notes with alarm the decision taken by Otis to transfer a major part of the productive capacity for the manufacture of complete lift units from Kirkby on Merseyside to Bloomington in the United States of America and, also, to Spain with the consequent loss of over 100 jobs; further notes that the Kirkby factory has a long record of producing lifts efficiently and to a high standard and that they are currently 20 per cent. cheaper in unit costs than their United States counterparts; and calls on the President of the Board of Trade to enter into urgent talks with Otis in order to convince the company that they should reverse this decision, both on commercial grounds and to save jobs in Kirkby.
