Privatisation And Public Safety
EDM number 1767 in 1992-93, proposed by Alun Michael on 15/04/1993.
That this House notes that the escape of prisoners from the custody of privatised escort services demonstrates the way in which the Conservative Party has pressed ahead with the implementation of dogma without due regard to public safety; believes that this issue illustrates the deep malaise within the Conservative Party and the failure of Ministers and ex-Ministers to distinguish between the principles of public service and the priorities of private profit; believes that the wish of Ministers to extend privatisation within the criminal justice system generally, and even to elements of the police service, is dangerous and divisive; and believes that the Home Secretary should suspend indefinitely all further moves towards privatisation in the criminal justice system and, by supporting the police, local authorities and local communities in their efforts, should start to take seriously his responsibilities to concentrate on the fight against crime.
