South Africa And Unilateral Nuclear Disarmament
EDM number 1747 in 1992-93, proposed by Llew Smith on 31/03/1993.
That this House welcomes the announcement by President de Klerk that South Africa abandoned its clandestine nuclear weapons programme and dismantled its weapons; further supports the agreement that South Africa has accepted international verification of its unilateral nuclear disarmament; believes this positive decision sets the example to Her Majesty's Government to cancel Trident and all other planned or secret nuclear weapons programmes, and to welcome full international verification of this decision; and considers that the billions of pounds saved from research, manufacture, deployment and decommissioning of nuclear weapons should be spent on the health and educational services, and on backing the British coal industry with proper investment.
