Referral To International Court Of Justice On The Legal Status Of Nuclear Weapons

EDM number 1701 in 1992-93, proposed by Frank Cook on 29/03/1993.

That this House notes that many countries have been developing the technical capacity to manufacture and deploy nuclear weapons; welcomes any moves to bring this threat to humanity under an effective system of legal control through the United Nations; fully supports efforts being made through the United Nations to request the International Court of Justice to give an advisory opinion under existing international law on the status of nuclear weapons; and calls on Her Majesty's Government actively to promote and work for any such initiative.
