Lothian Health Board And Bmws
EDM number 1683 in 1992-93, proposed by Alistair Darling on 24/03/1993.
That this House deplores the decision of Lothian Health Board to provide its unit general managers with a car as part of a financial package, and in particular the Unit General Manager of the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh with a BMW; recalls that the same hospital raised over ú10 million from the public by way of a charitable appeal in order to build a vitally needed extension and that the same hospital was begging for money for baby heaters; believes that baby heaters come before BMWs; further believes that any individual who demands a BMW in order to work for the Health Service might be better advised to go elsewhere; believes that this sort of behaviour will be the characteristic of hospitals once they opt out of the local health service; and wonders what the medical and ancillary staff will make of this salary package at a time when their own service conditions and salaries are subject to restraint.
