Democracy In Russia
EDM number 1671 in 1992-93, proposed by Ken Livingstone on 23/03/1993.
That this House deplores the Government's support for President Yeltsin's imposition of authoritarian rule rather than calling for elections for a new Parliament; condemns outrageous and systematic bias of the majority of the British media in reporting these events and their character assassination of those who have defended the Russian constitution including the Speaker of the Russian Parliament Ruslan Khasbulatov, who stood side by side with Yeltsin in resisting the August 1991 coup attempt; recognises that this conflict arises from Yeltsin's headlong rush to impose the most extreme form of monetarism, which has had a devastating impact on the Russian economy, when a majority in Parliament wish to see a more gradual transition based on Keynesian economics which has resulted in their gaining the support of the Federation of Russian Trade Unions.
