Consultation On The Future Of Water Service In Scotland

That this House notes the written admission of the Secretary of State for Scotland that more than 141,500 individuals had submitted signed petitions and individual postcards opposing privatisation of the water and sewerage services in Scotland by the closing date at 29th January in response to his consultation paper on that subject, while only 4,800 letters had still to be analysed at the time of the official reply to a parliamentary question on 4th March; recognises that many diverse groups in Scotland had no publicily supported continuing public ownership and control through directly elected local councils; and calls on the Government to attempt to salvage some part of its tarnished reputation in the field of democratic representation by agreeing with the wishes of the people of Scotland and leaving Scotland's water and sewerage services in the ownership and control of Scottish local authorities.
