Storm Damage In Cuba

EDM number 1643 in 1992-93, proposed by George Galloway on 18/03/1993.

That this House expresses its deep concern at the violent storm which hit Cuba on 12th and 13th March which has caused huge damage to large parts of the island; calls upon the British Government to respond positively to the disaster, which has caused up to 100 casualties, severely hit the banana and potato crops, staples of the Cuban diet, ruined parts of the coffee and tobacco crops, vital for Cuba's export trade, damaged over 2,500 economic projects and left 30,000 homes in need of rebuilding or major repairs, and flooded Havana and elsewhere, disrupting water and electricity supplies to tourists and residents alike; and notes that, due to misleading television reports, it has become widely believed that the storm originated on and exclusively damaged the Atlantic coast of the United States of America when in fact Cuba, which is much less able to pick up the pieces than the United States of America, which maintains an unnecessary blockade against Cuba, has suffered a massive blow from the elements which all humane and civilised societies will wish to mitigate,

This motion has been signed by a total of 60 MPs.
