Effects Of Budget On The Poor

That this House endorses the Low Pay Unit report Cold Comfort for the Poor; recognises that the poor were not invited to the tax-cutting party of the 1980s but they are now required to help clear up the mess; condemns a Budget which extends income tax to 200,000 low paid workers, increases the burden of national insurance and income tax on the low paid, extends the poverty trap and increases the costs of living for millions of poor families eventually by around ú5 per week; especially condemns the imposition of a tax on warmth; and calls on the Government to reverse its vicious policy of increasing taxes on spending through VAT which falls most heavily on the poor and instead extend direct taxation which is allied to an ability to pay and is, therefore, based on the concepts of justice and humanity.
