Scotland And Budget Briefing
EDM number 1633 in 1992-93, proposed by Alex Salmond on 17/03/1993.
That this House notes the views expressed by the Prime Minister's press spokesman at the No. 10 Lobby briefing following the Budget, in which he described the Budget as good news for Scotland and one for which the Scots had no reason to complain, especially in relation to the measures on whisky, training and petroleum revenue tax; believes that 10 Downing Street's message to the Scots can best be summarised as 'let them drink whisky'; doubts if this is a view which will be shared by the vast majority of Scots, especially the young, the old and the poor upon whom the imposition of VAT for domestic fuel costs will fall hardest or the disproportionate number in Scotland who face the imposition of what amounts to a petrol surcharge on Scots motorists and businesses; and calls upon the Prime Minister to dissociate himself from the comments of his press spokesman.
