European Community - Greek Cypriot Application

EDM number 1589 in 1992-93, proposed by Anthony Grant on 11/03/1993.

That this House notes that Cyprus was granted independence in 1960 on the basis that no fundamental decision affecting its future would be made without the concurrence of both of the Turkish-Cypriot and the Greek-Cypriot peoples; views with concern that the Greek-Cypriot leadership has applied for membership of the European Community on behalf of Cyprus as a whole without even consulting the elected leaders of the Turkish-Cypriots; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government to make it clear that it will not accept Cyprus as a member of the Community unless both the peoples of Cyprus agree.
