Building And Construction Industries
EDM number 1560 in 1992-93, proposed by Alan Meale on 10/03/1993.
That this House is concerned that the building and construction industries are currently suffering their worst recession since the 1930s, with record levels of bankruptcies and job losses and more than 450,000 jobs having disappeared in construction since the summer of 1989; recognises that such economic paralysis could not have afflicted the industry at a worse time with vital skills, expertise and investment being lost; congratulates the building trades union UCATT for its publication of the excellent document, A Budget to Build; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government to act immediately on its sensible advice which would help kickstart a recovery in the economy and end the ludicrous situation which sees mass unemployment, lost production and billions of pounds of benefit payments being paid out to building workers, idle through no fault of their own.
