Training Policies Of Brent Council
EDM number 1553 in 1992-93, proposed by Ken Livingstone on 09/03/1993.
That this House notes with alarm the decision of Conservative-controlled Brent Council to cut its grant to the training organisation, Kilburn Skills, following the comments of Tory Councillor Richard Buckley, the Chair of Brent Regeneration Agency, that he was acutely aware of the difficulties in placing trainees into jobs in present circumstances because the jobs were not there for the trainees to go to; and deplores his insensitive comments when he asked 'Why provide training at all? Why raise people's hopes? Why make things more difficult for existing skilled workers? And why should Brent's community charge payers pay for it?'; further notes Councillor Buckley's claim that he did not foresee a sudden rise in the number of job vacancies in the near future and the contemptible conclusion that 'if there was, there are plenty of unemployed people to fill them'; and calls on the Prime Minister to publicly dissociate himself from these disgraceful and short-sighted attitudes which reveal the real attitudes of so many Thatcherite Tories.
