Truancy, Juvenile Crime And Education Social Workers
EDM number 1515 in 1992-93, proposed by Greg Pope on 03/03/1993.
That this House expresses its concern at the figures recently released by the National Association of Social Workers in Education and the National and Local Government Officers' Association that there could be up to half a million children not attending school each day; believes that many children playing truant may be exposed to juvenile crime and further believes that it is better to prevent children becoming involved in crime than to deal with them once they have offended; notes that there are only 2,800 social workers in education and education welfare officers to deal with 8,516,000 children of statutory school age; and calls on the Government to recognise the valuable and complex work done by social workers in education and education welfare officers and increase both their number and the amount of professional training they receive.
