Thompson Carmichael Ltd. And Charles Roberts Engineering Ltd.
EDM number 1513 in 1992-93, proposed by David Hinchliffe on 03/03/1993.
That this House deplores the actions of Thompson Carmichael Ltd. of Bilston, Wolverhampton, who, having bought on 19th February the long established Wakefield tanker manufacturer Charles Roberts Engineering Ltd., arbitrarily closed the business on 1st March throwing its 105 employees out of work; notes that their action is a classic example of asset stripping of the very worst kind and that the closure was carried out in a cynical and deceitful way denying the workforce their basic employment rights of consultation and information that might have enabled them to defend their jobs; and calls upon the Department of Employment to investigate as a matter of urgency the actions of Thompson Carmichael Ltd. and take steps to ensure the enforcement of those provisions in the Employment Protection Act 1975 and the Trade Union and Labour Relations (Consolidation) Act 1992 , which have clearly been breached by this particular company.
