Plutonium Shipments (No.2)
EDM number 1503 in 1992-93, proposed by Margaret Ewing on 02/03/1993.
That this House notes with utmost concern the decision to allow the transportation of a cargo of plutonium from Dounreay to Sellafield through the fishing grounds of the Minch, a route of environmental sensitivity for local employment; notes that the 27 year-old vessel, the 'Aberthaw Fisher', was carrying a cargo of the highest level of danger and that this ship had already been involved in one collision; expresses its anger that such action should have been allowed against the background of the 'Braer' disaster; and demands that such transportation should cease forthwith in light of the Health and Safety Executive's statements that any release from the casks could contaminate the environment at large distances from any accident.
