Remarks Of The Minister For Public Transport
EDM number 1473 in 1992-93, proposed by Brian Wilson on 25/02/1993.
That this House notes the assessment of rail privatisation reported to have been made by the Minister for Public Transport, the honourable Member for Kettering, in which he recognises that the private sector will want to make a higher profit and that if increased revenue cannot be obtained through better marketing then the scheme will be a disaster; believes that there is not a shred of evidence to support the belief that better marketing will produce the revenue necessary both to provide profits satisfactory to the private sector and also maintain the railway network; expresses astonishment that the Government should risk disaster for the national railway system on the basis of such a tenuous and untested theory; and calls on the Government to reconsider its proposals in order that the disaster referred to by the honourable Member of Kettering might be averted.
