State Of Capitalism And The Labour Party
EDM number 1471 in 1992-93, proposed by Tony Benn on 25/02/1993.
That this House condemns the record of Her Majesty's Government which has created mass unemployment and caused homelessness and poverty; places on record the fact that the privatisation of public utilities has resulted in vast salaries for the bosses and higher prices for the consumer; opposes the threatened privatisation of railways, the coal industry, the Post Office and Scottish Water; calls on a future Labour Government to take all these back into public ownership; notes that every Labour honourable Member elected to this Parliament has committed himself or herself to the Constitution of the Labour Party, including Clause Four, and to the maintenance of close links with the trade union movement; and believes that working people who voted Labour should be reassured that those commitments are serious and permanent, especially when capitalism in Britain, in Europe and world-wide, is in a crisis greater than at any time since the Second World War.
