Shortage Of Secure Places For Young People
EDM number 1458 in 1992-93, proposed by Alun Michael on 23/02/1993.
That this House notes with interest that two years ago, after a long campaign by Labour honourable Members and others, the Government was forced to concede that it was a scandal for young people to be held in adult prisons in England and Wales because there was nowhere else for them to go; recalls the promise by Home Office Ministers that secure places would be provided to end this scandal; notes that the Department of Health has had to concede that not one single secure place has been provided in the two years that have elapsed since that announcement; notes that when asked to state when he would act to provide the secure places needed in England the Minister was unable to provide a single word of relevant reply; believes this confirms that lack of policy, lack of commitment and inter-departmental bickering continue to obstruct the fight against crime committed by young people and considered this to be an even greater scandal.
