Conduct Of The Opposition On Law And Order

That this House notes that since 1979 Her Majesty's Opposition has opposed, or tried to weaken substantially, every major piece of legislation the Government has brought forward to crack down on criminals and protect the public, that these measures include the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984, the Public Order Act 1986, the Criminal Justice Acts 1988 and 1991 and the renewal of the Prevention of Terrorism Act, that its voting record shows many other maximum sentences and opposing the Attorney General's power to refer lenient sentences to the Court of Appeal; notes that the honourable Member for Sedgefield whilst pretending to support the Government's new regime to deal with persistent young offenders in reality merely wants an extension of existing local authority secure accommodation; notes that in all other respects the honourable Member for Sedgefield in his Press briefing on 23rd February has merely plagiarised the Government's law and order policy; and concludes that Her Majesty's Opposition has no new ideas whatever to offer the British public on the fight against crime.
