That this House commends the cross-party and British-Irish peace group, New Consensus, for organising a peace lobby outside the Sinn Fein Ard fheis on Saturday 21st February, in Dundalk; welcomes its actions in seeking to persuade delegates to that conference to table a resolution in favour of the renunciation of physical force; recognises that the aims of Sinn Fein are legitimate only in so far as they are pursued by democratic means; further recognises that the quest for peace, reform and justice in Northern Ireland would be considerably strengthened if the provisional IRA called a permanent ceasefire and laid down its arms; and believes that, in these circumstances, the danger of increased loyalist paramilitarism could be significantly reduced and that Northern Ireland would be nearer the goal of demilitarisation and peace.
