Human Rights Of Kurds In Turkey
EDM number 1426 in 1992-93, proposed by Ken Livingstone on 18/02/1993.
That this House notes that 720 people have now joined the indefinite hunger-strike in Brussels instigated by the 15 members of the National Parliament for Kurdistan in Europe; further notes that the hunger strike has been organised to draw the world's attention to the plight of the Kurdish people currently within the Turkish state; believes that the world's media and politicians have to a large extent turned a blind eye to violations of human rights within Turkey, especially the suppression of the Kurdish language and culture; calls on Her Majesty's Government to make strong representations to the Turkish state to bring forward democratic solutions to the aspirations for self-government of the Kurdish people living within the state of Turkey, and cease all military aid to Turkey until such democratic moves are undertaken; and calls on Her Majesty's Government to investigate allegations of oppression and violations of human rights of the Kurds in Turkey by sending a delegation of parliamentarians to the affected areas.
This motion has been signed by a total of 47 MPs.
