Church Action On Poverty
EDM number 142 in 1992-93, proposed by Terry Lewis on 02/06/1992.
That this House notes that the Spring 1992 edition of Poverty Network, the journal of Church Action on Poverty, contained 18 open letters to the Prime Minister and that the distinguished writers are drawn from the widest possible range of religious and secular organisations currently working for the disadvantaged in communities throughout the land; further notes that all these experts identify the main issues relating to poverty to be housing policy, employment, social security and taxation; welcomes their call for the need to foster dialogue, involvement, debate and partnerships in order to seriously address the issue of poverty; agrees with the general conclusion that the problem of poverty is political and not economic; and therefore calls upon the Prime Minister, as a matter of extreme urgency, to respond to these 18 correspondents with practical proposals to tackle the poverty and disenfranchisement of so many of the country's fellow citizens.
