Public Ownership Of The Scottish Water Industry

EDM number 1367 in 1992-93, proposed by Alex Salmond on 09/02/1993.

That this House notes the view expressed by the Right honourable Member for Monklands East in his speech in Bournemouth on 7th February that the debate about ownership of industry and services has been 'largely sterile' and that it is today 'largely irrelevant'; condemns this latest retreat by the Labour Party from the principle of public provision of essential services; recalls his statement to the Water Rally in Glasgow on 30th January that the Government has no mandate to privatise the Scottish water industry; views with alarm the statement by the honourable Member for Monklands West on BBC's Reporting Scotland on 8th February that Labour will return the water industry to public control but that 'it might not be possible' to remove private involvement in the event of privatisation; regrets that the only beneficiaries of such equivocation will be private water companies who are queuing up for franchising; believes that far from being 'largely irrelevant' the question of ownership is central to the provision of good quality, properly funded and well managed water services; agrees with the vast majority of the Scottish public, that these can best be provided by a publicly owned and accountable industry and demands that the Labour Party in its anxiety to appeal to Basildon man stops sacrificing Scotland's vital interests and sabotaging at a critical juncture, the campaign to keep Scotland's water in public hands.
