Non-Maintained And Independent Special Schools, And Statements Of Special Educational Needs
EDM number 1352 in 1992-93, proposed by Win Griffiths on 09/02/1993.
That this House expresses its grave concern that the Government has chosen to disadvantage non-maintained special schools and independent special schools and parents of children with special educational needs by refusing to allow parents to have the opportunity to name a non-maintained or independent special school in their children's statements of special educational needs which they are being given in respect to maintained and grant maintained schools; and urges the Government to remove this second class treatment of these schools providing a highly skilled and caring service to children whose special educational needs are often profound and multiple, and give parents the opportunity to consider all types of school providing for special educational needs at the earliest possible stage in the statementing process and not at the end when children with special educational needs could well have suffered unnecessary delays in receiving the appropriate skilled help to meet their special educational needs.
