Universities Superannuation Scheme
EDM number 1330 in 1992-93, proposed by Ken Livingstone on 04/02/1993.
That this House welcomes the fact that academic and academic-related staff within universities who saw active service during the Second World War are currently entitled to count half the time they served as reckonable service for pension purposes; notes that this does not apply to academic and academic-related staff who did peacetime conscripted National Service; further notes that many of those who did peacetime National Service were involved in active service in Malaya, Korea and Suez; believes that extending the Universities Superannuation Scheme to cover those involved in peacetime conscripted National Service is morally justified and would not be too much of a financial burden, since the numbers involved would be finite, and over the age of 50 years; and calls on the Government to ensure that all those who did conscripted National Service who qualify for the Universities Superannuation Scheme are treated equally for pension purposes.
