Earth Summit
EDM number 132 in 1992-93, proposed by Robert Parry on 21/05/1992.
That this House heralds the forthcoming United Nations Conference on Environment and Development as an historic opportunity, at the eleventh hour, to take key decisions on the vital issue facing humankind today, namely the establishment of the principle of sustainable living, and equity to enable the planet to survive; recognises that there is deep public concern at the serious degradation of global life support systems, and the ensuing possible ecological catastrophes, concern which must be reflected by participants at the Earth Summit; believes that the combination of dire poverty and sustained environmental damage has a devastating effect on increasing numbers of fellow world citizens; notes that there are widespread and well-founded fears that the UNCED meeting will fail to agree on a programme which is sufficient to tackle both the short and long term problems of the global environment; calls on the Government to take a radical stance at Rio de Janeiro and implement specific targets unilaterally if the Earth Summit fails to agree such targets; and further calls on both the Prime Minister and the Leader of the House to allow for a full day's debate in the House on the outcome of the Earth Summit meeting.
This motion has been signed by a total of 6 MPs.
