South African Rugby Football Union And Amateurism
EDM number 1291 in 1992-93, proposed by David Hinchliffe on 01/02/1993.
That this House, recalling that after considerable public pressure the South African Rugby Football Union recently lifted its ban on players also playing amateur rugby league, notes with interest the case of Mr Albertus Einslin who withdrew recently from amateur trials with Wakefield Trinity RLFC after being threatened with being banned for life from playing rugby union in South Africa; further notes that Mr Einslin has now accepted the offer of a ú30,000 a year job and expenses of ú200 to ú400 per match for playing rugby union with Western Provinces; wishes Mr Einslin well in his playing career; and calls upon the South African Rugby Football Union and the International Board of the Rugby Football Union to clarify exactly what is now meant by the amateurism principle in rugby union in South Africa and elsewhere.
