Cancellation Of Prison Service Hq Move To Derby
EDM number 1283 in 1992-93, proposed by Joan Ruddock on 28/01/1993.
That this House is appalled at the mismanagement and massive waste of taxpayers' money, following the cancellation of the transfer of Prison Service Headquarters to Derby; recalls that the contracts for the move were signed in June 1992 after two years of planning, yet cancelled a mere three months later; notes that ú11.5 million has already been spent on land and designs and that the main contractors are claiming compensation in excess of ú20 million, amounting to nearly 2 per cent of the entire annual prison service budget; is gravely concerned that no-one appears to be accepting responsibility for the fiasco; and supports the request made to the Public Accounts Committee to investigate this matter.
This motion has been signed by a total of 82 MPs.
