FORTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF THE SINKING OF THE 'PRINCESS VICTORIA'
EDM number 1281 in 1992-93, proposed by James Wallace on 28/01/1993.
That this House notes with great regret the fortieth anniversary of the loss of the car ferry 'Princess Victoria', which sank on Saturday, 31st January 1953, with the loss of 133 lives, whilst in passage between Stranraer and Larne; notes with concern that on that occasion, as also in the case of recent maritime accidents, adequate safety measures were introduced only after the tragedy had already occurred; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government to acknowledge that prevention is better than cure and accordingly to take the lead in promoting higher safety standards at sea.
