21st Anniversary Of Bloody Sunday

That this House, notes the 21st anniversary of the tragic events of Bloody Sunday, welcomes the recent statement by the Prime Minister that those killed on the day were innocent; believes that this statement can begin to alleviate the pain and resentment of those who were injured and the families of those killed as well as all those who consider the events as an injustice that has significantly fuelled the conflict in Northern Ireland; agrees with the cross-party and British-Irish New Consensus peace group that the subsequent Widgery Tribunal has been thoroughly discredited, not least by two well-researched television documentaries in 1991 and 1992; and calls upon the Government to re-open the Widgery Tribunal or to establish a new enquiry in the hope of discovering the truth of that fateful day and healing the scars of Bloody Sunday.
