Life Saving Care For Premature Babies
EDM number 1217 in 1992-93, proposed by Ann Winterton on 21/01/1993.
That this House deplores the principle underlying the recent publication Born Too Soon by Jane Griffin of the Office of Health Economics, that the provision of life-saving care to premature babies is too expensive and that the resources could better be deployed elsewhere; believes that every individual, regardless of age, size, race or gender, deserves equal access under the National Health Service to the medical care which they need; invites the Secretary of State for Health immediately to distance her Department from these conclusions and to make it clear to Health Service managers that they must continue to provide a comprehensive neonatal healthcare service; and welcomes the substantial and generous contribution which many individuals and charities make to providing additional essential equipment to premature baby units.
