Public Support For Political Demonstrations

EDM number 1209 in 1992-93, proposed by Alex Salmond on 20/01/1993.

That this House notes that the anti-Maastricht protest on Sunday 17th January attracted a reported 1000 people to Trafalgar Square in London and contrasts this with the 25,000 people who marched for democracy and freedom for Scotland at the Meadows in Edinburgh during the European Summit; reflects that allowing for relative population size this indicates that the people of Scotland are some 250 times more exercised about the lack of democracy in Scotland than the people of Britain are about the Maastricht process; suggests to the anti-Maastricht campaigners that they would earn more public respect and support if they linked their legitimate call for a referendum on Maastricht with the overwhelming demand for a referendum on the constitutional future of Scotland; and urges Scottish politicians to implement the popular demand to recall the Scottish Parliament from its adjournment.
