Additional Cost Of Constituency Offices
EDM number 117 in 1992-93, proposed by Brian H Donohoe on 20/05/1992.
That this House notes that an increasing number of honourable and Right honourable Members operate offices within their parliamentary constituencies; recognises that there are inevitable additional costs associated with such local offices; believes that Members should not be financially penalised for choosing to operate local offices in the best interests of their constituents; further believes that it is unfair that such Members may have to spend as much as 30 per cent. of their office costs allowance on charges for accommodation and services which are provided free to Members who operate solely from the House; believes that the actual additional costs should be reimbursed only to those Members who actually operate constituency offices; and calls upon the Leader of the House to take appropriate steps to deal with this matter and to commission an independent comprehensive review of the general adequacy of the office costs allowance.
