British Coal Redundancies

EDM number 1139 in 1992-93, proposed by Eric Illsley on 12/01/1993.

That this House notes that redundancy terms have been accepted by large numbers of mineworkers as part of British Coal's attempt to close collieries by stealth following the public outcry against the initial closure decision and is concerned that many men accepted redundancy through the uncertainty created by the Government and British Coal prior to the decision of the High Court of 21st December 1992, that the closures are unlawful; and therefore calls upon the Government and British Coal to ensure that no further voluntary or compulsory redundancies are allowed until after consultations are complete and that all those former mineworkers induced to take voluntary redundancy by the unlawful decisions of British Coal since 13th October 1992, and who so wish, to be reinstated.
