Burnley Engineering Products
EDM number 1127 in 1992-93, proposed by Peter L Pike on 11/01/1993.
That this House regrets the closure in December of Burnley Engineering Products resulting in the total loss of 339 highly skilled aerospace jobs; notes closure followed an announcement by the Laird Group, the parent company, on 29th May 1992 to dispose of its aerospace interests; regrets that the Group and its Chairman and Chief Executive, Mr. J. A. Gardiner, and also the Managing Director of Burnley Engineering Products, Mr. W. Bowden, prevented the disposal of Burnley Engineering Products as an ongoing concern, rejecting the efforts of the workforce, unions, Burnley Borough Council, Lancashire Enterprises and others to enable interested purchasers to acquire the factory as an ongoing concern; and believes that management effectively prevented a successful take-over of the site and dealt with the workforce at the Burnley site during that six month period in every respect in a manner to be condemned as totally unacceptable and are as such responsible for the jobs lost.
