Targets For Air Quality
EDM number 1060 in 1992-93, proposed by Joan Walley on 11/12/1992.
That this House notes the anniversary on Monday 14 December of two London smogs, the notorious killer smog of 1952 and last year's smog which saw the highest levels of nitrogen dioxide ever recorded in the capital; congratulates the National Society for Clean Air, formerly the National Smoke Abatement Society, for its contribution to preventing the pea-soupers of old; recognises the threat to health of nitrogen dioxide smogs; acknowledges that motor vehicles are now the major source of air pollution in all Britain's cities; warns that the benefit of improved emission controls on individual vehicles risks being lost through the continued growth in traffic and congestion; and calls for a national sustainability plan and agreed targets for environmental quality.
