Objective 1 Status For Highlands And Islands

EDM number 1032 in 1992-93, proposed by Ray Michie on 09/12/1992.

That this House calls on the Government to use its influence whilst Britain holds the presidency of the EC to secure Objective 1 status for the Highlands and Islands; notes that in 1988 misleading statistical measurements were used, which resulted in the Highlands and Islands being wrongly awarded Objective 5(b) status; acknowledges that the Highlands and Islands have an increasingly important role to play in the European Community; and expresses grave concern that without Objective 1 status the key objectives of a strategy for the Highlands and Islands to alleviate the problems of peripherality, to increase income and employemnt, arrest population drift, foster viable communities and develop the environment in a sustainable way will not be properly addressed.
