Financial Position Of St.bartholomews Hospital
EDM number 1021 in 1992-93, proposed by Brian Sedgemore on 08/12/1992.
That this House condemns Professor Tomlinson in the strongest possible terms for peddling false information about Barts' financial position to a conference of NHS managers on 7th December; notes that Professor Tomlinson told the conference on the basis of heresay and tittle tattle that the projected deficit has risen from ú5 to ú10 million; notes that the honourable Member for Hackney South and Shoreditch wrote to the Minister for Health on 4th December setting out the true position which is that on 3rd December D.K. Reynolds, the Director of Finance at Barts, reported to the regional health authority his forecast of a trading deficit of ú3.5 million; notes that on 25th November Professor Mike Besser and the Director of Finance reported to the Barts Trust a reduction of over ú3 million in Bart's total deficit in just seven months; believes that the false information given to Professor Tomlinson and the Government is part of a desperate dirty tricks campaign to close Barts because the hospital has destroyed Tomlinson's arguments; and calls on the Secretary of State for Health to instruct the regional health authority, whose Chairman is Mr Tim Chessels, to stop this despicable campaign.
