Inquiry Into Labour Party Selection At Leith

EDM number 772 in 1991-92, proposed by Ron Brown on 27/02/1992.

That this House congratulates The Guardian and the Edinburgh Evening News for publishing statements by the honourable Member for Edinburgh, Leith, correcting a number of unfounded allegations, particularly that he had been deselected; accepts that he won reselection when Leith Labour Party members last had the democratic right to freely choose their prospective parliamentary candidate; notes that a defeated challenger has been imposed on Leith constituency, contrary to accepted rules; recognises that a party official involved in the second reselection, which excluded the honourable Member, lost his brief-case, and, although it was returned, the contents also revealed discrimination against women and ethnic minorities; regrets that Larry Whitty and Joyce Gould, senior Labour representatives, have refused to investigate this incident, despite protests from the Trade Union movement, who have copies of the documents; and calls on the Leader of the Labour Party to ensure that the complaint is fully debated by Labour's National Executive Committee.
