Further Redundancy And Exchange Closures At British Telecom
EDM number 747 in 1991-92, proposed by Max Madden on 25/02/1992.
That this House expresses deep concern at British Telecom's latest announcement about telephone exchange closures and staff redundancy; notes that 14 operator assistance centres will close, including Waltham Cross, Croydon, Ilford, Ealing, Watford, Nottingham, Brighton and Swansea; further notes 13 directory assistance centres will close, including Bradford, Preston, Bolton, Peterborough, Reading and Portsmouth; understands in Bradford there are claims that calls have been switched to York to justify the closure of facilities in Bradford and that working shifts have been re-organised dramatically without proper consultation or notice; and calls upon British Telecom to halt their latest closure and redundancy programme pending an enquiry conducted by the appropriate House of Commons Select Committee in which all interested parties would have the opportunity of expressing views about the future development of this vital communications service.
